The Wisconsin Be SMART Coalition encourages Wisconsinites to celebrate America Recycles Day on November 15. Recycling is a simple way in which everyone in Wisconsin can protect the environment, preserve our natural resources, and contribute to the economic well-being of our state.
93% of Wisconsinites recycle, but there is more to do! Thousands of tons of valuable resources are lost each year when people place items that could be recycled into the trash. According to a 2000 study by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, many easily recycled materials are still thrown away. For example, 58% of plastic bottles, 20% of aluminum cans, and 54% of paper and paperboard packaging are not currently recycled by residents and businesses. Every little bit helps. We invite everyone in Wisconsin to renew their commitment to recycling and buying recycled products.
“America Recycles Day gives us an opportunity to rediscover the importance of recycling and buying recycled products,” said Karen Fiedler, Be SMART Coalition Chairperson, “This is something each of us can easily do that has a big impact on jobs and the economy in Wisconsin.
The Be SMART Coalition’s Recycle More Wisconsin campaign, found at www.RecycleMoreWisconsin.org, shows what items can be recycled, tells residents how to “recycle more,” and explains how recyclables are processed and shipped to companies who use them to manufacture new products.
